The Laboratory: 630 and 648 SERC Building

Aisle

The Zdilla Group's main lab is a 2000 sq. ft. wet lab in the Science and Education Research Center (SERC). It consists of approximately 26 bench spaces 11 fume hoods and 18 student desks. The lab features a wide array of instruments and equipment. Above is pictured our glovebox lab, with two MBraun UniLab units, and one MBraun LabStar unit.

Solvent columns

Stills

Due to the need for rigorous air-and-water-free manipulations, solvents are purified using either the PureSolv purification columns (left image) or by distillation with sodium/benzophenone ketyl scavengers (right).

Hood

Schlenk line

The lab contains a number of fume hoods, each of which contains heated stir plates, and a Schlenk line (right) for air sensitive manipulation. The Schlenk line consists of a glass double manifold with one manifold providing dry nitrogen gas, and the other under vacuum. Stopcocks allow the alternative selection of each manifold in order to either remove the atmosphere, or purge a flask.

UV-Vis Spectrometers

The lab houses a Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS5 FTIR spectrometer and two UV-Visible absorption spectrometers. A Shimadzu UV-1800 spectrophotometer, and a Shimadzu UV-2550 spectrophotometer with a double-blazed monochromator for ultra-high accuracy in the UV region at extreme concentrations, variable temperature cabability, and an optional reflectance geometry.

Aisle

The main lab is spacious, consituting about 2000 square feet, about 25 bench spaces, 11 hoods, 18 desks, and a splendid view of the Philadelphia skyline.
